How to Plan a Dog-Friendly Weekend in the Catskills from NYC

Sometimes, life can be so busy you forget to slow down…

We almost skipped our anniversary getaway. A change of scenery can be surprisingly what we needed. For us, the Catskills, New York became the perfect escape: fresh mountain air, breathtaking views, interactive art park, cozy boutique hotels, and quality time with our senior dog, Chance.

If you’re planning a romantic Catskills weekend getaway or a dog-friendly trip from NYC, this 2-day itinerary has everything you need for a rejuvenating quick romantic escape!

Day 1: Saturday – Road Trip & Relaxation in the Catskills

Morning: Drive from NYC to the Catskills

  • 🚗 Driving distance: ~3 hours from NYC (via I-87 N and NY-28).
  • Tip: Pack snacks, water, and your dog’s favorite toys for a comfortable ride.

Lunch: 📍 Mountain Brauhaus – Hensonville, NY

  • 🥨 Enjoy authentic German cuisine at 📍 Mountain Brauhaus, a must-stop for lunch in the Catskills.
  • Reservations recommended; expect a 45 min–1 hour wait during peak times. It’s 2-hour detour from our hotel, The Perch but totally worth it as we’ve been going here every year since 2019!
  • Additional detour: If you got more time… 📍Minnewaska State Park Preserve (located across from the Mountain Brauhaus) for an easy waterfall hike.

Afternoon: Check-in at 📍The Perch Hotel, Catskills, NY

  • 🏨 Cozy, boutique hotel perfect for unwinding after your drive. Recently renovation and opened since June 2025!
  • Automated check-in/out, quiet rooms, friendly concierge (Katie) and modern amenities make it perfect for couples and dog owners.

Facts: Only 2 hours north from the G.W. Bridge, we are perfectly positioned between the vibrant towns of: Hudson, Hensonville, Catskill, Hunter, Woodstock, and Kingston. The Perch Hotel offers guests convenient access to some of the best attractions in the region, all within a 25-minute drive.

  • Got a little postcard from the Perch, after our stay! Never got a postcard from a hotel stay and they remembered our anniversary and Chance, that was such a nice touch 👍🏼

Evening: Sunset cocktails & Romantic Dinner

With our pre booked dinner reservations at 8pm, we arrived a little earlier to check out the garden during the dusk at the Henson Hotel (the resturaunt is location inside).

  • Cocktails: 📍The Henson Hotel Garden – perfect sunset views for photos.
  • Dinner: 📍Restaurant Matilda (reservation recommended) – seasonal dishes by acclaimed NYC chefs Jeremiah Stone & Fabián Von Hauske Valtierra. The garden is also a popular wedding venue in the Catskills.
    • We ordered: Amish Golden Chicken (a house special), Confit Tuna belly, East Coast Oysters, Raw Red Pawns, Wood Grilled Oysters, Smoked Beets, Hudson Valley Trout.
    • Review: Most of the dishes were tiny portions and little more salty than I would like overall. We ordered 5 appetizers and 2 mains and still we were hungry! The server was nice and attentive which made the meal relaxed. What I liked being a foodie, where we were seated, a corner table around from the kitchen window so we had first views all the dishes coming out and the entire dining room. All in all a nice anniversary dinner. The even waiter poured a tasting of the sparkling house wine!

Day 2: Sunday – Art, Brunch & Scenic Catskills Exploration

Morning: 📍Art Omi Sculpture Park – Hudson, NY

  • 🌳 Explore 120 acres of outdoor contemporary art and architecture at Art Omi Sculpture Park, dog-friendly trails included.
  • Over 60 sculptures by artists like Jeffrey Gibson, Steven Holl, Dan Colen, Alicja Kwade, and Olaf Breuning.
  • Visitor tips: Wear comfy shoes, sunscreen, bug spray; watch for ticks, snakes, bees and slippery areas.

Brunch: 📍Season 66 French Bistro Diner – Hudson, NY

  • 🥐 Classic French bistro brunch to fuel your day before heading back to NYC.

Optional Stops / Scenic Detours

  • 🏘️ Town of Hudson: Charming streets, boutique shopping, and local art galleries.
  • 💡 Hudson Athens Lighthouse: Hidden gem along the Hudson River.
  • 💦 Kaaterskill Falls: One of New York State’s tallest waterfalls (260 ft). Hike to the base or enjoy the view from above.
